As of today, it's even easier to travel on Carris, with the possibility of paying the on-board fare with bank card contactless, The validator can be used, physically or virtually, directly in the validators of all the carrier's vehicles.. Passengers of Carris, the municipal public transport operator in the city of Lisbon, will now have the benefit of a more convenient payment system.

With the arrival of contactless Carris, it is no longer necessary to buy rides in advance. However, the fare applied with this type of payment is that of maple, This means that a trip on a bus is €2.10 e on a streetcar costs €3.10. In the Bica, Glória and Lavra elevators, contactless allows you to buy two trips for €4.10; and in the Santa Justa elevator, for €6.

As the bank card payment option applies to the purchase of the on-board fare, each purchase is only valid for the journey the user is going to make, except in elevators, where two journeys are allowed (one up and one down). This payment option also allows you to buy travel tickets for families or small groups, up to a maximum of 10 people, by selecting the number of tickets you want directly on the validator.

This new technological solution is the result of a project developed in conjunction with SIBS and Axians, and makes it possible to use contactless bank cards from the Visa or Mastercard network, either the physical card or a virtual card in cell phones or watches with NFC technology (Apple Pay, Google Pay or other). Security and privacy requirements are guaranteed by the Mass Transit solution, which is certified to read cards and process payments associated with travel.

“With the introduction of payment by bank card, we are reinforcing our commitment to improving our customers” travel experience, thus ensuring greater convenience and better accessibility when using our service", Pedro de Brito Bogas, president of Carris, said in a statement. “Every step we take to improve the travel experience is aimed at converting more users from individual transport to public transport.”

Carris is the third operator in the Lisbon metropolitan area to allow contactless payments, after Lisbon Metro and the Fertagus. Carris Metropolitana plans to do this by 2025, the year in which the Navegante card will also be available on cell phones. Carris also offers payment by MB Way, a system that can also be used on board the MTS in the municipalities of Almada and Seixal.
