Leaving your bike safely outside the station and then catching the train is now easier at five stations on the South Bank. Corroios, Fora da Amora, Fogueteiro, Coina and Penalva now have 12 covered bicycle spaces in a structure called BiciBox. Using a mobile app, all you have to do is book a free place and leave your bike.

O BiciBox is a secure bicycle parking system provided by the company Biciway in partnership, in this case, with Fertagus, which runs the north-south railway line in the Lisbon metropolitan area, between Roma-Areeiro and Setúbal.

The parks are located in the Corroios, Foros de Amora, Fogueteiro, Coina and Penalva. This equipment allows users to store their bicycle safely before boarding the train, thus promoting the complementarity between the bicycle and rail transport. In this way, passengers can use their bicycle to make the so-called first or last kilometer of their journey. commute, This can save you one or two bus journeys, making the journey quicker and more convenient.

Access to the BiciBox is simple: simply download the Biciway app (available for iOS and Android), register and reserve your seat, which will be assigned automatically by the app.. Reservations need to be made for each use, i.e. if you want to leave your bike in the BiciBox every day, you will need to make a reservation every day.

“With this measure, Fertagus reinforces its role as an active partner in promoting innovative mobility solutions and enhancing the connection between different modes of transport, in line with the sustainability and decarbonization objectives of the Lisbon metropolitan area”, The company said in a statement that it also wants to contribute to the “reducing the use of private cars”. “This system guarantees practicality, safety and convenience for those who choose the bicycle as a means of transportation in their daily lives”, reads the same note.

The BiciBox kicked off last European Car Free Day, on September 22., This date also marks the end of European Mobility Week - an initiative that every year mobilizes cities and citizens around the importance of sustainable mobility and reducing the environmental footprint.

At Setúbal station, there has been a BiciBox since 2022, also supplied by the company Biciway. However, this equipment is not included in the app now presented, nor in the Fertagus offer; this BiciBox was installed by Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML), and is accessed via the Navegante card. In Lisbon, there is also a network of Biciparks, operated by EMEL and also accessed via the pass card.

Unfortunately, there is no integration of all these systems into a single platform, similar to the one that exists, for example, in the Barcelona metropolitan area - each company creates its own network.
