O SigaAPé is a project developed by APSI - Association for the Promotion of Child Safety. It consists of a "human bus" in which several children walk to school together safely.
SigaAPé trains have a defined route to be done on foot, with an established schedule, in which children are accompanied by one or two adults. The goal is to encourage sustainable modes of travel and foster socialization among families in the neighborhood.
The project started in 2015 in Lisbon, with the support of BIP/ZIP, in some schools in the parishes of Penha de França, Santa Maria Maior, São Vicente and Arroios, having already expanded to other cities such as Aveiro and Tavira.
With the implementation of SigAPÉ, we intend to analyze and rethink the public space and its use around the school and on home-school trips, in order to increase children's mobility and accessibility, as well as to promote healthier travel modes. There are numerous obstacles to the free movement of children in public space. Besides the physical barriers created by excessive speed of vehicles, narrow and poor sidewalks and abusive parking, the road environment and home-school routes are perceived by the school community as unsafe and unsuitable for the use of smoother and healthier travel modes - such as walking and cycling.
