Route 706 is Carris' first fully electric route, connecting Cais do Sodré and Santa Apolónia without CO2 emissions. Until now, the 706 only operated at weekends, but now it will make the journey every day.

The new buses - 15 in total - have capacity for 71 passengers and are equipped with state-of-the-art batteries and a reliable and efficient electric traction system. They represent an investment by Carris in improving its service and meeting the environmental targets of the company, the city and the European Union. They are, according to the company, quieter and more comfortable buses, which require less maintenance and which have a range of 180 kilometers on a single charge.

Carris is in the process of buying 100 more buses this year, 70 with natural gas and 30 electric. "It's an unavoidable path, this path of decarbonization and electrification of our network"Tiago Lopes Faria, president of Carris, said at the event to present the new additions to the fleet.

"This strategic shift that we are making in the city, towards a more environmentally sustainable city, capable of honoring its commitments in terms of reducing emissions, also capable of contributing to the reduction of pollution and a better quality of life for all those who live and work here, involves an important change in the way we move around and use the transport system."commented Fernando Medina, Mayor of Lisbon.
