Reducing resource consumption is one of the necessary ways to reduce the human footprint on the planet and thus safeguard our future and the Earth's future. In this sense, Lisbon has a growing reused water network.
The reused water network that currently exists in Park of Nations allows this resource to be reused for watering green spaces and washing streets, where the use of drinking water and properly filtered can be a real waste. However, the municipality intends to to extend this network to the Zona Ribeirinha and Bairro Alto, more specifically the area between Campo das Cebolas and Largo de Santos, and the northern Bairro Alto. The construction work is scheduled for completion next year, 2021.

The plan is to create a city-wide network of recycled but safe water for reuse in irrigation and washing, and which comes from the Waterworks - that is, the treatment plants. With this network, the municipality could save 75% of its water consumption by 2025, a reduction of up to 1 million m3. If extended to large consumers, the potable water savings could reach 6 million m3 in 2025, which translates into a volume of water identical to the entire consumption in a city like Aveiro.
The City has been spending less water in recent years, with a decrease of 50% in the last four years - in 2014 consumption was 8 million m3, while in 2018 consumption was around 4 million m3.
