Every Tuesday, between 8 a.m. and 9.30 a.m., the area around the Dona Filipe de Lencastre school group, in the Arco do Cego neighborhood, will be closed to traffic and reserved for the use of soft modes of mobility, such as walking and cycling.
This initiative, which kicked off on September 22, in the middle of European Mobility Week, is part of a pilot project entitled Move Around Your City and live "promoting sustainable mobility and changing habits when commuting to and from school".
For an hour and a half, the school can only be reached by bicycle, on foot, by skateboard, rollerblades, scooter or public transport, and car traffic is not allowed near the school. In this way, the children of that neighborhood can also count on more breathable air next to their school and less noise. Access is, however, fully guaranteed to residents of that neighborhood, through on-site coordination by the Municipal Police.
“Move Around Your City involves the city's schools and is part of the municipality's School Mobility Plans, which provides for the development of various initiatives such as awareness campaigns for the use of public transport, debates, training sessions, themed days, study of parking solutions, bicycle trains and walking trains.", says the municipality.
