It is in the old Quinta das Carmelitas, in Carnide, the 20th horticultural park in Lisbon. It opened its doors this weekend and welcomed 24 gardeners, who will now be able to grow crops close to their homes. In a highly residential area such as Carnide and Lumiar, this park is of the utmost importance in bringing a bit of the countryside into the city.
The plots at Quinta das Carmelitas are in addition to the 9.1 hectares of land for agricultural production that already exist in the city. The goal is to increase this space in the coming years. Also in Carnide, another horticultural park is almost ready, this time on a once-unused piece of land in the Horta Nova neighborhood.
By 2021/2022, a total of five new horticultural plots are to be born in the city. The plots are allocated, as always, to residents living near them. You can learn more about urban agriculture in the city here.
