When urban design makes a difference. At this intersection of two roads, the sidewalk has been extended to signal that the pedestrian has priority.
The difference is enormous: instead of the pedestrian occupying the car's space, the car invades the pedestrian's space. By being forced to go up and down the sidewalk, the car is forced to reduce its speed. In residential areas, a small calming measure like this can substantially improve the lives of all people.
The example shown here is in Telheiras, in the parish of Carnide. There are other continuous sidewalks of this kind scattered around the city, for example, in Marvila and in Alameda Dom Afonso Henrique, in Areeiro.
