EMEL, the municipal company that also manages the city's traffic lights, is going to modernize the traffic lights at the intersections with the most pedestrian traffic in Lisbon. There will be 270 intersections renovated with LED technology by the end of 2021, where pedestrians will also have information about the time they have to cross.

In press releaseEMEL explains that the "the installation of automatic pedestrian crossing lights using LED optics is part of the process of improving and modernizing mobility that EMEL, as Manager of the urban traffic light network, has been carrying out in Lisbon" and wants to contribute to "a more reliable and peaceful experience of the city, making it ever safer and more sustainable".

The new pedestrian traffic lights are already in place and working in the Campo Grande, Benfica and Eixo Ribeirinho areas. EMEL's aim is to extend this pedestrian crossing system to the whole city"However, for the time being, priority will be given to areas with more pedestrian traffic, but also to the proximity of schools and health facilities.
