It started out as three, now it's five. Every week, five bicycle trains set off from different parts of Lisbon, picking up children along the way and ending up outside their schools. This was already the case in Parque das Nações, in Avenidas Novas, and now it's also the case in Restelo (at EB Bairro do Restelo) and Telheiras (at EB Telheiras).
At Restelo, the train runs daily (Monday to Friday) and there are three lines available, with different routes and stops to cover students from different areas. In Telheiras, the train runs on Wednesdays and is aimed at 2nd and 3rd cycle students. The bicycle trains are an initiative that was born from the community and which the City Council began to support and develop in October 2020.
Whether it's sunny or raining, the trains leave, making it a safe and fun way to get to school, and no longer causing congestion or pollution in the city. The bicycle trains are accompanied by a minimum of one adult for every four children and any parent or guardian can volunteer to help drive the train. For more information and to sign up, is to go to this page of the municipality.
Participation is free and voluntary, and registration is required at the address above.
