The process of debate and public consultation on the future of Martim Moniz Square continues into a new phase. Until June 21, the municipality wants to receive illustrations, drawings or photographs that exemplify the following that represent the solution you would like to see for the transformation of that public space, and that put into practice the results of the first phase of public consultation, completed at the beginning of the year.
This first phase consisted of survey open to the whole population which was available between December 14 and January 15. This tool collected more than a thousand people took part. The municipality also carried out 74 surveys using the group discussion methodology (focus group) and received drawings from 73 kindergarten and primary school children from the parish of Santa Maria Maior.
The results of the first phase have now been condensed into a report and in a preliminary proposal that you can download below. It is essential to consult these documents so that you can take part in this new phase of debate on the future of Martim Moniz:
According to the participations collected, the five most frequent words to describe the future of the square were: "garden", "green", "culture", "space" e "security". For the majority of respondents, Martim Moniz is a place they pass through, with 76% of those taking part in the survey passing through the square on a weekly or occasional basis, preferring the afternoon (35%) for walking (26%). The square is also a place to go for stores, cafés and/or restaurants, as well as to meet friends. The highest level of importance is indicated for trees and shaded areas, followed by hygiene, cleanliness, garbage collection and air quality. The highest level of satisfaction is indicated for the spice trade, followed by the underground park, stores, markets and restaurants.
According to the preliminary proposal for Martim Moniz, the aim is to create a garden square here, which connects with the surrounding streets and buildings, and which, in the meantime suspended ZER ABCIt also serves as a pedestrian gateway to downtown and the river. A multicultural space for all ages, a place of freedom. A safe, open and barrier-free place. A place of silence and dialog. A place that's cool in summer and cozy in winter.
Unlike the first phase of the participatory process, this second phase does not involve the presentation and description of personal ideas in written form, but rather graphic elaborations that show how to put into practice the guiding principles drawn from public participation.
