Arroios metro station reopens this Tuesday

The reopening of the Arroios Metro station comes four years after it was closed for expansion work and is two years late.

Closed for four years, the Arroios Metro station will finally open, on schedule after complications with the first contractorwhich delayed the work. The first reopening date had been set for 2019.

The announcement was made this Monday. In a statement sent to newsrooms, the Arroios Metro station will open to the public this Tuesday completely renovated. The reopening will be attended by the Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, and the President of Metro de Lisboa, Vitor Domingues dos Santos.

The work to extend and renovate the Arroios station included The main objective is to extend the pier to receive six-car trains and to provide the station with three elevators for disabled access.The refurbishment will ensure full accessibility at this station and improve the quality of service throughout the Lisbon Metro network. The refurbishment of this station also included the redesign of the concourses and the reorganization of the operational support spaces.

Work on the Arroios Metro station began in the summer of 2017The project was initially scheduled for completion in the first part of 2019. However, complications with the first contractor, who failed to meet the stipulated deadlines, led to the termination of the contract and the opening of a new public tender, new tender and a new approval from the Court of Auditors, which led to a considerable slippage in deadlines. Work on the station was at a standstill between the second half of 2018 and the beginning of 2020.

The renovation of Praça do Chile is yet to be completed. A traffic circle is planned for this square; however, the first project did not include the cycle path that has since been built on Avenida Almirante Reis, so it is expected that the project will have to be revised. Lisboa Para Pessoas contacted Metro de Lisboa about the renovation of Praça do Chile, which has so far not provided any further clarification.
