Installed and ready for several months, the City Hall has delayed its activation because Mayor Carlos Moedas defends that they should be well visible and signaled, in a pedagogical logic and not of "fine hunting". The local authority has thus invested in placing an additional sign on the avenues monitored by radar, which reinforces the official sign that the Traffic Signal Regulation (RST) requires for any road is subject to speed control (sign H43 - Instantaneous Speed).
The Chamber also launched a campaign on its social networks with the slogan "Less Speed, More Safety" and created a page on its website - lisboa.pt/radar - with the location of all radars."In order to increase road safety and reduce accidents in the city of Lisbon, the City Council intends to invest in strengthening traffic calming measures, both in terms of changes in road infrastructure and in terms of strengthening road safety systems."says the municipality in a communiqué.
The 20 new locations for radar installation were defined based on the monitoring of accidents in the city of Lisbon, carried out by the municipality in conjunction with the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), and on the following three criteria:
- Control the entrances and exits of the city;
- Complement existing radar positions;
- Mitigate risk factors, especially roads with high gradients and 3 lanes of traffic in the same direction.
The implementation of this road safety measure represented a total investment of 2.1 million euros and is the result of a measure by Fernando Medina's executive. The new radars should be in operation at the end of 2021, according to the first deadlines advanced. The new radars are modern equipment with more up-to-date technology, which make it possible to control speed simultaneously in several lanes and in both directions, while the old radars only allow speed control in a single lane. There are no plans to purchase more radars at this time.
