What is the future of bus terminals? How can the current bus terminals be transformed into true multimodal interfaces and connectivity spaces that, in addition to the usual transport services, offer people other utilities and experiences to improve the convenience and quality of travel, and even of the non-traveling population?

That's the big question behind the RESTART research project, which brings together EMEL and the Lisbon City Council and enters a new phase of participation. After a online survey and a round of interviewsThe RESTART team will be talking to people who use the five main terminals in the city on a daily basis, and who do not normally sign up for the other forms of participation. Under study are the terminals of Campo Grande, Colégio Militar, Oriente, Pontinha and Sete Rios.

Thus, in the next two weeks, RESTART will be present in these five terminals in actions of listening to the users:

  • Seven Rivers - from June 29th to July 2nd;
  • Military College - from July 4th to 5th;
  • Campo Grande - from July 6th to 8th;
  • Pontinha - from July 11 to July 12;
  • East - from July 13 to 16.

Thus begins a new phase of co-creation with civil society, which aims to know the opinion and give a voice to the people who use these spaces or may use them in the future. If you can't catch the RESTART team in person, you can also participate remotely, through this new online form.

For EMEL, it is essential to offer more comfortable, safer intermodal spaces, with more efficient accesses and that integrate different modes of transport with a view to a better quality of service. But in order to carry out this work, the company intends to listen to the people who visit, work, study, and live in Lisbon and who use those spaces.

RESTART is a European project coordinated by the Lisbon Municipality and developed in partnership with EMEL. It aims to study scenarios for the reconversion of Lisbon's five main bus terminals into more comfortable, safe and multimodal interfaces, with more efficient access and integrating different modes of transport in order to improve the quality of service and the experience of the people who use them.

The project also plans to explore different operating models with a view to ensuring sustainable management of these infrastructures in the long term. It is also intended to ensure free market competition and equal opportunities for all transport operators to access these infrastructures.
