Web application, created in 2020 by two volunteers, shows the waiting times of the Lisbon Metro in a very simple way.

How nice would it be to know the waiting time of the Lisbon Metro before you arrive at the station? Or even when you are already going down the escalator, so you don't have to be running around unnecessarily? Next Metro is a web application that gives you in a very simple way the waiting times of the nearest metro stations.
O Next Metro wins us over precisely because of its simplicity. At any time, just go to proximometro.com, activate the location and see how long the subway is at the nearest stations. That way you can better plan when to leave your home or office, or if it's worth a quicker step because the subway is just around the corner.

Because it is a web application, works on any device and operating systemon either a cell phone, computer or tablet. As an alternative to location sharing, you can browse the Lisbon Metro network, choosing the line and station you want to see information about. For each station, the app shows you the waiting times, updated to the second, in each direction of the next three trains. It is also possible to see the timetable of the trains at each station.

Next Metro uses the official API of the Lisbon Metro. The application is unofficial and was developed by two young programmers, Cláudia Conceição (frontend) and João Almeida (backend). The duo has already tried to contact the transportation company to see if they would be interested in their work; in the meantime, they plan to add new ones, such as train carriage numbers, indication of line disruptions, and whether or not waiting times are updated in real time (Metro's API doesn't always respond). Many of these features are already planned, but not yet designed.
There are many people who, on a voluntary basis, develop apps to improve their experience on public transportation and that of others. In this Guide we are mapping all these digital platforms and solutions.
