Lisbon installs 40 garbage cans with sensors and solar energy

The new paper bins compact the trash for more storage and warn when they are full. They are solar-powered.

That's 40, for nowYou can already find them in six parishes: Alvalade, Avenidas Novas, Belém, Misericórdia, Santa Maria Maior, and Parque das Nações. According to the municipality, points with greater flow of tourists and visitors were privileged.

Lisbon's new paper bins are solar-powered and are networkedallowing the city's Urban Hygiene teams to know, at a distance, when they are full and to optimize collection routes that is, if certain paper bins are empty, there is no need for a car to pass by. The paper bins also have a compacting function, allowing for greater storage capacity than conventional trash cans.

Note that Lisbon was not the first city in the Metropolitan Area to adopt these technological paper bins. Oeiras was the pioneer in 2021, the capital having contracted the same model as its neighboring municipality Gaspar. Cascais also has this type of equipment, but with a different model.

Find out which parishes are part of the project start-up, and where to find these new paper bins.
