Lisboa Para Pessoas and Shifter launch magazine about cities

O Lisbon For Peoplelocal newspaper about Lisbon, and the Shifter, a journal of reflection on present and future themes, presents a a journal on cities, urbanism and the organization of space in general. A special publication that invites us to reflect on this theme with essays, interviews, reports, and different perspectives and ways of thinking.

This magazine is the result of a collaboration between Lisboa Para Pessoas and Shifter for three reasons: first, because they are two sister projects, sharing resources with each other; second, because Shifter has been publishing a thematic magazine in paper since 2021 and decided in this issue to talk about cities, the major theme of Lisboa Para Pessoas; third and last, because collaborations in journalism make perfect sense.

Throughout almost 100 pages, we start from the concept of 'city' to reflect and rehearse about much more than that. We have an interview with Portuguese sociologist and politician Ana Drago about Lisbon's second crisis, the Housing Crisis, and we talk about the "15 minute city" with the author of the concept, Carlos Moreno. João Mineiro rehearses on the right to the city and the space for politics; Carolina Franco questions who cities are designed for and introduces us to Feminist Urbanism; Rossana Fonseca looks at our society of image and control; and Guilherme Rodrigues opines on cities as democratic spaces in the 21st century. But there's more: we also bring you two names in architecture that are worth knowing for the way they think about their area: Anupama Kundoo and Keller Easterling.

As João Gabriel Ribeiro, Shifter's director, writes in the editorial that accompanies this magazine, "A city is more than a collection of buildings; it is one of the greatest materializations of the complexity of contemporary life. Without representing everything in the world - and it is important that we say this, the world is not and cannot be only cities - cities are the ultimate symbol of life today. (...) How are we designing our cities? Who can belong to them? Who enjoys their existence? And how do these structures respond to the new dictates of the contemporary world, such as the proliferation of the image, digitalization, and surveillance? We do not bring any closed answers, but architects, urban planners and anthropologists give us some clues about the paths we can take to better understand this wonderful social construction we have decided to inhabit."
