Lisbon has a new urban park. It's called Encosta do Olival Urban Park and is part of the city's Peripheral Green Corridor. This new urban park is located on the border with Odivelas, offering a privileged view over the municipality and an urban landscape made up of large housing units and road infrastructures.

The construction of the Encosta do Olival Urban Park started in October 2022 and was completed before this summer, and the opening of this new green area to the public went unnoticed (Lisbon City Council did not hold any inauguration or communication). The work cost approximately 792.5 thousand euros and was executed by the company Unikonstroi.

This new urban park follows one of the slopes that separate Lisbon from Odivelas, starting next to the Calçada de Carriche cycle bridge and ending near the Valorsul recycling center on Estrada Militar, in Lumiar. Through a series of accessible routes, it is possible to walk or cycle throughout the park, built on top of an area of landfills and leftover materials from works and low and medium voltage EDP poles, and enjoy a new viewpoint, along the former Military Line of Defense.

The Encosta do Olival Urban Park has picnic tables, an outdoor fitness/gym area and several benches where you can sit and enjoy the scenery - either at the start of the day or at the end of the day, during a beautiful sunset. A drainage ditch has also been created, which is intended to function as a small retention basin that can capture some of the flow from the hillside. As for the vegetation, all the trees that were in good condition were kept and new trees and several shrubs were planted. The park operates on a low irrigation regime with natural, biodiverse meadows.

The Lisbon Peripheral Green Corridor will also integrate the Carnide Urban ParkThe Vale do Forno Urban Park, which will be about 20 hectares and will transform a former sealed landfill into a park with a strong component of biodiversity promotion; and the green, pedestrian and cycling connection between Calhariz de Benfica and the public square of Fonte Nova and the Monsanto Forest Park.
