Algés promenade damaged again

The maritime cycle path between Algés and Cruz Quebrada is closed again due to the storms at the beginning of February, which caused significant damage to the sidewalk. It will take some time to repair the route, but some people continue to use it for their walks, runs and daily commutes.

The sea turmoil that has occurred in recent weeks caused significant damage on the Passeio Marítimo de Algés, especially on the shared cycle path that connects to Cruz Quebrada. Currently, the route is officially closed, with no reopening forecast. However, walkers, joggers and cyclists still use it, bypassing the concrete barriers recently installed and which function more as a warning of the poor state of the infrastructure than as an actual obstruction.

This is the the second time in the space of about a year that the cycle path between Algés and Cruz Quebrada, which is shared with pedestrians, has been damaged. The heavy rains at the end of 2022 also caused damage to this paved route, with the brutality of the sea "eating" part of the sidewalk. The situation lasted about six monthsIt was only last summer that the Oeiras City Council repaired it, before World Youth Day (WYD) took place.

At the time, the municipality led by Isaltino Morais wanted the Administration of the Port of Lisbon (APL) to repair the route, since that portion of the seafront falls within your jurisdiction. However, in view of APL's inertia and the approach of WYD (the cycle route was an important access to the Passeio Marítimo de Algés, where part of this great event would take place), the Oeiras City Council decided to make the repair using its Municipal Budget. The correction cost about 30 thousand euros and was carried out by the company Olico, Ldawith whom the municipality had a contract for "repair and maintenance of walls in various locations".

The repaired section is still intact at the time of writing, and the damage caused by the storms at the beginning of February was more significant than that recorded at the end of 2022. There is mud and stones that, with the sea waves, ended up on a significant part of the routenext to the Cruz Quebrada train station; further on, as we walk towards Algés, there are a small hole due to a slight subsidence of the sidewalkand, close to the collapse of a year ago, there is a new piece of sidewalk, of significant size, "eaten" by the sea.

Repairing the new damage is likely to take some time. LPP has asked questions of APL and the Oeiras City Council and will update this article when and if we receive answers.
