Colégio Militar/Luz station on the Lisbon Underground has now three new elevators, available for use by its customers every day between 06h30 and 01h00, during the normal opening hours of the Lisbon Underground network.
This new equipment connects the station's surface to the concourse (one elevator) and the concourse to the pier (two elevators).
With these new elevators, the Lisbon Metro now has one more station with full accessibility, and this new equipment allows the station's architectural barriers to be overcome for people with reduced mobility.
The work began in April 2019 with the preparation of the space, taking into account the construction specialty, allowing the installation of said equipment by the vendor.
These works also include remodeling the station's technical spaces and the creation of public toilets with full accessibility, as well as the treatment of structural pathologies, rehabilitation of coverings and metalwork, remodeling of the fire detection and combat systems, remodeling of the pumping systems, refurbishing and installation of new telecommunications equipment, among others.
These interventions, which involved an investment of € 2,606,089.89, are part of the investment plan underway since 2017, with the aim of modernizing and improving accessibility to the Lisbon Metro network.
The Colégio Militar/Luz station was inaugurated in October 1988, as part of the extension of the section of the Azul Sete Rios line (today called Jardim Zoológico) to the Benfica area. It has an architectural design by António J. Mendes and plastic intervention by Manuel Cargaleiro.
In 2009, in order to comply with the Accessibility Promotion Plan, contracts were launched for the installation of elevators and the creation of public toilets, whose work began in 2010 with completion scheduled for 2012.
Work to reformulate the project with a view to launching a new general contract to complete the work began in mid-2016, which would also include a new set of works to treat structural pathologies and various systems and repairs.
The tender for the new general contract was launched in 2018. With regard to the contract for the supply and installation of elevators, it was possible to maintain the existing contract; however, it was necessary to adapt the project to meet the new applicable legislation that came into force after the original project.
Metropolitano de Lisboa reaffirms its effort to continue promoting sustainable mobility in a fully accessible perspective, following the best standards of quality, safety and economic, social and environmental effectiveness, by investing in new forms of loyalty and attracting new customers.
