At the very beginning of the year, on January 12, several people responded to the appeal made and showed up at four points in the city to plant about 20,000 trees and bushes. In the scope of Life Lungs, a project of the Lisbon City Hall that counts with European funding and aims at increasing the city's resilience to climate change, an irrigation calendar was organized thinking of the hottest months of the year.

According to information made availablemost of the sites where the 20,000 trees and bushes were planted "coincide with recent parks/green corridors, where soil structural conditions are insipid, with poor organic matter contents and low water holding capacity, aggravated in some cases by steep terrain slopes". Considering these conditions, it is to be expected that many trees and shrubs will not survive, so plantations have been made close together and in large numbersas was explained to the participants of the initiative.

"It is, however, necessary to ensure that the survival rate remains as high as possible and therefore, in addition to other cultural operations such as the replacement of the stakes, the protection tubes, the weeding of the boilers and the cutting of dry herbaceous vegetation, we have an ongoing irrigation program, especially during the summer period“explains the Life Lungs project on its website.
