A set of streets and avenues in Areeiro, recently intervened for the installation of cycling corridors, will now receive sidewalk improvements. The interventions will include the introduction of comfortable flooring and the removal of barriers, which will make the sidewalks more comfortable, according to Junta de Freguesia do Areeirois essential for "for a more inclusive parish".

The introduction of a cycling network without improving the adjacent sidewalks is one of the most heard criticisms; in addition, the failure to introduce a comfortable floor next to a bike path often leads to pedestrians occupying it, potentiating conflict situations. During the works in London Square, the sidewalk was intervened next to it, but this did not happen in Avenida Guerra Junqueiro or Avenida Manuel da Maia, for example. These are some of the arteries to be intervened but there are more:

  • Edison Street: widening the sidewalk near the intersections with Avenida de Roma and Avenida de Madrid;
  • Avenida Padre Manuel da Nóbrega: requalification of the sidewalk in mixed paving in the bus terminal area;
  • Alameda D. Afonso Henriques: requalification of the sidewalk with the introduction of comfortable sidewalk in the section between Avenida Guerra Junqueiro and Avenida Manuel da Maia;
  • Avenue of Paris (odd sides): Requalification of the sidewalk with the introduction of comfortable sidewalk;
  • Avenida Guerra Junqueiro (even sides): Requalification of the sidewalk with the introduction of comfortable sidewalk.

The work is scheduled to begin in the 2nd week of January and will last two months.
