More pedestrian space in front of Quinta de Santa Clara

The parish of Santa Clara, one of the most neglected in Lisbon because it is on the outskirts of the city, nevertheless has many reasons to visit. One of them is the beautiful garden at Quinta de Santa Clara, next to which more pedestrian space is now being created. The work is part of the second phase of a project by the A Square in Every Neighborhood in that parish.

After the first work between March and August 2017, the second phase of an intervention that will cover Rua Vitorino Nemésio, Alameda António Sérgio and the north side of Rua Jorge de Sena is now underway, covering a total of 22,000 square meters.

The objectives of this intervention A Square in Every NeighborhoodSome of them have already been completed:

  • Create a new pedestrian boulevard - Alameda de Santa Clara - flanked by trees, allowing people to cross the block from north to south, linking Rua Vitorino Nemésio and Rua Jorge de Sena;
  • Define a central, flat square - the Praceta de Santa Clara - connecting the new pedestrian boulevard of Santa Clara, the Jardim de Santa Clara and the Alameda António Sérgio;
  • Create transversal routes along Vitorino Nemésio Street, Jorge de Sena Street and Santa Clara Square, in connection with the new Santa Clara pedestrian boulevard;
  • Rehabilitation of the entrance to the Santa Clara Garden, from the Alameda and Santa Clara Square;
  • Promote Alameda António Sérgio as a leisure and circulation space;
  • Eliminate architectural barriers and obstacles to natural paths, promoting inclusive pedestrian circulation;
  • Regulate parking and road circulation, making them compatible with accessibility and the enjoyment of the space;
  • Extend the pedestrian area next to the Santa Clara gallery, encouraging commercial activity, namely the installation of terraces, and the liveliness of the public space;
  • Revitalize the tree structure by planting deciduous, non-allergenic species, essentially, with obvious seasonal variations: planting maples in Alameda de Santa Clara; wild cherry trees for Alameda António Sérgio, mulberry trees in Praceta de Santa Clara, linden trees in Rua Vitorino Nemésio and carob trees to mark the south and north entrances to Alameda António Sérgio;
