Through the program A Square in Every NeighborhoodLisbon City Hall will requalify Alameda do Beato Square "from its original memory and identity". "More pedestrian space, reorganization of circulation and parking, more green spaces and new public lighting, are the general lines of intervention", according to the municipality. Construction is expected to begin on September 1 and is estimated to last 230 days.
The project intends "transform the space into a new meeting point for the local community, with more space dedicated to soft modes of locomotion, where automobile traffic is more conditioned". Says the Chamber, "in the future, with wider sidewalks, stores and terraces may expand into the public space".
The work, emphasizes the municipality, "was planned in order to reduce the inconvenience to residents, merchants, pedestrians and motorists. Continuous circulation corridors will be ensured, and access to all residences and establishments will be guaranteed..
In the new Largo da Alameda do Beato:
- New living spaces, for outdoor activities;
- More trees and green spaces;
- Wider sidewalks, with more comfortable and non-slip sidewalk;
- Elimination of architectural barriers and new tactile floor;
- New crosswalks and improved crossing at existing ones;
- More street furniture (paper bins, benches, tables, chairs, drinking fountains, among others);
- New rules for parking and loading and unloading areas;
- A space requalified next to the churchyard of the Convent;
- Improved drainage network and replacement of sewage collectors.
