Several have been in execution new bike paths throughout the city of Lisbonwith completion deadlines around summer time. The projects can be followed on the municipality's websitebut here in Lisboa Para Pessoas we are catching up from time to time on what's new in the city. We are now publishing a new status report on cycling Lisbon, updating the previous one. that we did at the end of March.

Telheiras

In Telheiras, the small stretch of 300 meters on Avenida Cidade de Praga, at the exit of the traffic circle of Francisco Assis Square, which did not have a bike path, now has a new tar pavement and platforms in the bus stop areas. As for its extension to Benfica (and to Avenida Lusíada) through Avenida Marechal Teixeira Rebelo is still in an embryonic stage.

Still in Telheiras, a bike path is being built on Rua Vieira de Almeida. This connection, with the bidirectional typology, is painted (it will have beacons) until the intersection with Rua Prof. Hernâni Cidade, but the plan is to continue it until Lumiar (Alto da Faia) through Rua Abel Salazar. However, according to the Lisbon City Hall, the intersection between Rua Vieira de Almeida and Rua Abel Salazar is complex and will need a more thorough intervention. This new bike lane on Rua Vieira de Almeida starts where the one on Rua Prof. Fernando da Fonseca ends.

Alameda das Linhas de Torres

From Telheiras we follow Alameda das Linhas de Torres to Lumiar. The bike path is finished and already allows a trip without complications. The bus stops have the usual platforms where pedestrians have priority and this time this priority is reinforced with text signs on the ground. There are traffic lights at the main intersections and the connection to Rua Prof. Fernando da Fonseca is also done. All that is missing is the last section of this bike path from Alameda and through Rua Cipriano Dourado to Campo Grande.

Detour Road

Still in Lumiar, the Detour Road already has its bike path ready. It currently connects the Ameixoeira Valley Urban Park to the Calçada de Carriche cyclopedestrian bridge. The route is composed by a 30+bike shared path going down and by a segregated counterflow with flowers going up. The connection to the bridge is made by a coexistence zone - a small garden created in an area between buildings where car parking was also rearranged. Projects are under development to create bike paths between the bridge and Odivelas along Calçada de Carriche and between Estrada do Desvio (this section) and Lumiar (Rua Alexandre Ferreira, where a bike path ends).

Olaias

Moving to another part of the city, we arrive at Olaias, a neighborhood that will have a bike path between Casal Vistoso Urban Park and Avenida de Paris, passing by the Areeiro traffic circle and the Afonso Costa Avenue. This new link connects a densely inhabited area and also a green area, having this double function. The bike path is already painted in some sections and has traffic lights in an advanced stage.

From Avenidas Novas to Avenida Almirante Reis

In Avenidas Novas, we find some novelties. A The bike path that runs along the Gulbenkian to Praça de Espanha is being painted greennow uniform in color with the neighboring bike paths. Unfortunately, the imperfections of this section were not corrected, such as its width (the part rebuilt during the construction of the Praça de Espanha was wider) or the paving gap in the access area to the Gulbenkian. At Avenue of BernThe bike path is progressing slowly with the lowering of sidewalks, relocation of bus stops, and some painting.

At Almirante Reis AvenueThe painting is done and the new segregators are in place. For now, the new configuration is still only done between Alameda and Rua dos Anjos; the rest of the avenue still needs to be changed and the connection made through Martim Moniz Square. However, and despite still being under construction, the bike path can already be passable as long as you keep in mind that there may be disturbances in the section.

Finally, we follow through Sete Rios until Benfica. On Prof. Lima Basto Street, a section is already painted green and it is already possible to see its continuation "dug". In Sete Rios, the connection with the Condes de Almoster Street bike lane is being traffic lighted and traffic lights are also all that's missing in the Condes de Almoster Street bike lane, since the paintings are done and it's already possible to circulate there safely (provided you pay extra attention in some intersections).

Some final, brief notes:

  • the bicycle path of Lusíada Avenue is already concluded and is now being extended through Avenida Marechal Teixeira Rebelo, to Benfica and Carnide, as we reported here;
  • the small section in Santa Apolónia is done, having solved that discontinuity;
  • the bicycle path in south side of Alameda dos Oceanos is also ready, as we said here;
  • the bicycle paths between the Radial de Benfica and the Lisbon Camping Park and between Quinta das Flores and Braço de Prata are in an advanced stage;
  • at Azinhaga da CidadeIn Lumiar, you don't see a bike lane yet, but there is a lot of construction going on there;
  • at Campo de Ouriqueare being created multiple streets 30+bicycle;
  • at Marvila/Bela Vistathe Pardal Monteiro and Eng. Ferreira Dias streets and Avenida Dr. Augusto de Castro are being upgraded with a cycling network - the work started at the beginning of May.
