Lisbon's public bike sharing system
GIRA is Lisbon's public bike sharing system, managed by EMEL. EMEL is the municipal mobility company, managed by the Lisbon City Council.
The GIRA network has 130 stations in operation, representing about 2500 bicycle docks. Currently, about 1600 bicycles "GIRAm" in the city. The GIRA's have already cycled more than 12 million kilometers, in more than six million trips made in the city of Lisbon.
GIRA is expanding in Lisbon. There are dozens of stations that should open by the end of the year. You can follow all of GIRA's news here.
At the moment, the GIRA network consists of 130 stations and about 2500 bicycle docks.
GIRA has a fleet of about 1600 bicycles, most of them electric. Each bike has a unique four-digit number - if electric, it has an "E" prefix; if classic, it has a "C" prefix.
The bicycles have adjustable saddle, pedals resistant to daily wear and tear, lrear and front lights for nighttime travel, audible and easily reachable buzzer, immediate response brakes, cell phone holder e USB port for charging your cell phone. Some bicycles have front basket and support for infant seat.
GIRA electric bikes give you the push with PEDELEC assistancewith a maximum continuous rated power of 0.25kW where the power is progressively reduced and finally stopped when a speed of 25 km/h is reached or when the user stops pedaling. Each bike has up to 25 km of autonomy.
First: download the GIRA application, available for Android e iOS.
Within the GIRA app, choose the pass that suits you best: annual (€25/year), monthly (€15/month) or daily (€2/month). You can pay with MB Way, Multibanco or PayPal. Once the payment is done and the pass is subscribed, you can start using GIRA immediately.
→ In the app, you find the nearest station and check if it has bikes. Go to that station and choose the bike you want to unlock. Always check first that everything is in working order, including whether the seat is operational, the tires are good, and the brakes are OK;
→ Select the bike in the app, unlock it, and remove it from the dock. You have 15 seconds to remove the bike from the dock, after which it is locked. You can only remove the bike from the dock after the second beep, i.e., when you select the bike it starts beeping, but it is when the beeping becomes more continuous that you can remove the bike;
→ When you arrive at your destination, pack your bike at the nearest dock and confirm that the trip has ended in the app. You should pay attention to the vacant seats in each station. If a station is full, look for the next one. You can always check the status of each station in the app beforehand;
→ At the end of your journey, it is important that you evaluate your trip with GIRA. Your feedback is very important for EMEL to continue improving the public bike sharing service. If your bike has any problems, please rate it between 1 and 3 stars and leave a comment.
GIRA opens at 6 am and closes at 2 am. However, you can pick up a bike until 2 o'clock and return it whenever you feel like it. Support service is available 24/7.
You can use GIRA from 16 years old. If you are under 16 and use the GIRA anyway, lying about your age, you are not covered by insurance in case of an accident/injury.
It is optional. The bicycles provided by GIRA are electrically assisted bicycles (PEDELEC) with a maximum continuous rated power of 0.25kW where the power is progressively reduced and finally stopped when a speed of 25 km/h is reached or when the user stops pedaling. For this reason, and in light of current legislation, it is not mandatory to wear a helmet.
You will be able to accumulate points depending on your trips with Gira bikes. You can then use these points on future trips, since every 500 points are worth €1.
→ 10 points for each trip made;
→ 100 points for each time you start a trip at a station with more than 70% occupied docks;
→ 100 points for each time you finish a trip at a station with less than 30% of the docks occupied.
GIRA stations are made up of a variable number of docks, where you can take off or leave your bike. If a dock has a green light, it means that it is available - that is, you can leave your bike in or take it out of that dock. If it has a red light, it means that the dock is unavailable and you cannot leave your bicycle there.
The stations have free wi-fi service available for users (you have to log in with your GIRA account), so you don't need to use your mobile data to pick up or drop off bikes.
Every station and dock has a number. There are stations on the street that are not in operation; never leave a bike at a station that is turned off or that is grayed out in the app.
To start the trip you need to have the app on (with internet, wi-fi or mobile data connection), during the trip you can turn off the app and the internet connection; but at the end of the trip you have to turn on the app to confirm the end of the trip.
The stations have wi-fi available so you don't need to use your mobile data.
If you have any problems with GIRA, before, during or after your trip, you should contact customer support at 211 163 060. If needed, the service team or technician will arrive on site within 30 minutes at the latest.
All GIRA users benefit from personal accident insurance and indemnity insurance (view details).
If you have an accident, you should contact EMEL immediately or, in case of hospital assistance, within 24 hours of the accident. Depending on the seriousness of the accident, you should call 112.
If you are on the go and need help, or if your bike has broken down, call the service number, 211 163 060.
If you have an accident and crash a car, the insurance you have for being a service user may cover the damage to the car. Any bodily injury or property damage caused to a third party while using the GIRA service is insured.
