Urban art around Arroios Market begins to highlight the pedestrian space gained

Placing beacons around the Arroios Market in November was just the first step in widening the pedestrian space around that commercial area, slowing car traffic, improving road safety, and preventing second-row parking. The new pedestrian area, of 1174 square meters, is now being intervened with urban art by Boa Hora Artistic Collective Studio.

The collective won a contest launched by the Arroios Borough Council in conjunction with the Lisbon City Council to give new color to the surroundings of the Market, as part of the project The Street Is Yoursas the site tells Secret Lisbon.

Miguel Brum, Vasco Costa, Paulo Ferreira, João Miguel Santos and Frederico Mendes are working in four distinct areas, of which two are already ready and the other two, which are more complex and larger, will be ready in three to four weeks. The intervention is taking place at the intersections of the streets leading to the Market Square, whose angles have been readjusted to calm traffic and increase the safety of the site.

According to Time Out, the designs were intended to be seen at street level, but also from above and from the surrounding windows. Because it is a work on the ground, quick-drying paint is being used, with great resistance and durability, of the same type that was used in Rua Cor de Rosa, in Cais do Sodré.
