Quadrupling of the Cintura Line will increase the railway offer between Lisbon and Sintra. New stations are planned in Olaias/Chelas, Braço de Prata and Marvila, and the expansion of the Oriente station. The investment also prepares Lisbon for the future high speed rail link to Porto.

A first step has been taken to increase the railroad's capacity in the capital. Infraestruturas de Portugal has launched an international public tender to increase the capacity of the railway line from Roma/Areeiro to Sacavém, with new stations at Chelas/Olaias, Braço de Prata and Marvila and the expansion of Gare do Oriente.
O call for tenders now launched, e published on October 4th in the Diário da República, wants to find someone to develop the project and the environmental impact study related to this set of interventionsThe total length is around 15.5 kilometers, divided into two sections: the section between Roma/Areeiro and Braço de Prata, which is part of the so-called Linha de Cintura (the line that surrounds Lisbon, connecting Alcântara-Terra to Oriente); and the section between Braço de Prata and Sacavém, which is already part of the Linha do Norte.
According to Infraestruturas de PortugalThis investment is included in the National Investment Plan (PNI2030) e "aims to increase the operational capacity of the rail system, improving mobility conditions, ensuring greater speed and a greater number of trains available to the thousands of passengers who use rail transport for their daily journeys within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area".
Specifically, it's about:
- a quadrupling of Waistlinebetween Roma/Areeiro and Braço de Prata stations, This will allow us to increase the capacity not only of this line but also of the rail connections to Sintra, i.e. to run more trains between Lisbon and Sintra (the Sintra Line connects with the Cintura Line at Campolide station);
- a Modernization of the North Line between Braço de Prata and Sacavém stations;
- the refurbishment of Oriente station with insertion of three more lanes (Gare do Oriente currently has eight lanes, so it would have 11);
- the construction of new stations in Olaias/Chelasin Silver Arm and in Marvila (new station), which are suitable for the new rail services and ensure better conditions of safety, comfort and access for users. A station in Chelas /Olaias will be equipped with an interface that will connect it with the Olaias Metro station;
- the construction of three new bridges, a viaduct and two tunnels, the complete replacement of the catenary systems on the Belt Line and the Northern Line, and the construction of infrastructure to support the signaling and telecommunications component.

"These interventions will make it possible to increase the number of trains on the Cintura, Norte and Sintra Lines, particularly suburban, regional and long-distance trains"writes Infraestrutura de Portugal. "The aim of these investments is to create the conditions for the implementation of new high-speed services between Lisbon-East and Porto Campanhã." The public tender has a base price of 9.4 million euros and the bidding phase is currently underway.
