The new Carlos Consiglieri Garden is at the back of Benfica Road, near the church and the Baldaya Palace. It is a new green space of proximity.
It's called Carlos Consiglieri Garden - a tribute to the humanist, pedagogue, olisipographer and autarch - and is right in the center of the Benfica parishnear the church and the Baldaya Palace. The new green space is the result of the requalification of a vacant lot between buildings and the streets Jorge Barradas and Cláudio Nunes, and offers a natural amphitheater, seating areas, a children's zone and also an open-air gym.
Aimed at different age groups, the garden integrates trees and shrubs that provide visual protection from surrounding buildings without compromising light penetration. With an area of approximately 4315 square meters, this new green area of proximity also allows a accessible pedestrian path (without obstacles), between the high and low levels, i.e., between Rua Jorge Barradas and Rua Cláudio Nunes.
In the garden, a main green pocket, permeable and comfortable, vocationed for stay and leisureThe slopes were structured, creating all the conditions for a full and versatile use by the local population. The slopes were structured, proposing the creation of a natural amphitheater, which can be used for cultural events. There are two slides and two play areas for the younger ones, and gym equipment for the older ones. The urban furniture has wood, iron, and concrete as its main materials, providing a coherent and aesthetically pleasing language to the entire space.
The Carlos Consiglieri Garden develops in a old agricultural space, which, many years ago, was inserted in one of the many farms that existed in the Benfica area. With the construction of housing in the 20th century, the area became an uncharacterized wasteland in the back of a series of buildings. Although abandoned, the land was nevertheless, used by the population as an informal pedestrian connection between the streets at high elevation, close to the cemetery, and Benfica Road, an extremely important commercial artery.
The construction of the garden was started in mid 2021 and cost about 441.4 thousand euroswas awarded to the company Vibeiras through a public tender. The work was in charge of the Lisbon City Hall and was supported by the Benfica Parish Council.
