For the next three weekends, between 9pm on Friday and midnight on Sunday, traffic will be banned in Chiado, specifically in and around Rua Garret.

During the Christmas season, and particularly at weekends, Chiado attracts many people who walk around this historic part of Lisbon. Some of them are in search of Christmas shopping, exploring the various stores, while others opt for a relaxed stroll, enjoying the lights and the festive atmosphere.
In response to the increased pedestrian flow in Chiado, Lisbon City Council will finally implement.., restrictions on road traffic in that area, in particular on the whole of Rua Garret and on sections of several streets that connect to that street, namely Rua Nova do Almada, Rua Ivens, Rua Serpa Pinto and Rua Anchieta, and Calçada do Sacramento.

These conditions will be in force in next three weekends (weekends only), between December 22 and January 7, between 9 p.m. on Friday and midnight on Sunday. Access for residents is guaranteed throughout the day, as is loading and unloading - only between 6 and 10 am. The aim, according to Lisbon City Hall, is to "to mitigate the effects of the concentration of people in the Chiado area during this festive season, to increase pedestrian safety and allow free movement".
Chiado should no longer have cars, like similar areas in other European cities and capitals. But Lisbon City Council has indefinitely postponed the implementation of road restrictions in the historic city center. The ZER ABC project has been put on the back burner with the promise of first developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the whole city.
Still, who knows if these Christmas restrictions in Chiado won't serve as an experiment for something more definitive. It's worth remembering that the municipality led by Carlos Moedas recently took the decision to close Rua da Prata to traffic.
Over the Christmas period, and until January 7th, Lisbon City Hall has two free parking lots, the one in Ameixoeira and the one in Campo Grande (next to FCUL), connected by a shuttle free from Carris to downtown. This special bus stops at Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade and Rossio. To take advantage of this service, simply go to one of the parking lots mentioned, where there will be a promoter who will provide all the necessary support. O shuttle has been available from Thursday to Sunday, between 3pm and 10pm, with 30-minute departure intervals on weekdays and 20-minute intervals on weekends and public holidays.
