The creation of Lisbon Metropolitan Library NetworkThe new network of libraries will be launched with the signing of a financing contract that will allow around 75 libraries to be modernized. For now, this network will enable the 18 municipalities in the metropolitan area to find support from the PRR - Recovery and Resilience Plan for the acquisition of computer equipment and integrated catalogs. In the future, it will enable libraries to collaborate with each other and share resources - from managing the collection to programming cultural activities.

Libraries are much more than just spaces for consulting books, periodicals and audiovisual materials. They are also spaces for coworking and study areas, as well as inclusive places with free access to computers and the internet. They also play an important role in programming cultural activities, mainly in the field of reading. Animations and dramatizations for children and families, conferences, exhibitions, book launches, film screenings and workshops are part of their regular programming.

You want, with this Metropolitan Network, that the libraries of the 18 municipalities of the Lisbon metropolitan area (aml) work together to provide the population of the region with a better public service and strengthen the metropolitan identity.

The signing of the document, between the GEPAC - Office for Cultural Strategy, Planning and Evaluation of the Government and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), arises within the framework of the PRRand will affect 586,000 euros for the purchase of computer equipment and integrated catalogsfor libraries in the Lisbon metropolitan area (amL). The funding contract, which is the first stage of this Network, was signed in the presence of Carla Tavares, President of AML, and Carlos Humberto de Carvalho, First Secretary of AML, in a small ceremony that was also attended by Isabel Cordeiro, Secretary of State for Culture, and Fernanda Heitor, Director General of GEPAC.

To Carla Tavares, "the cultural component has an important role to play in the overall development of the Lisbon metropolitan area". Carlos Humberto de Carvalho said that "this is yet another example of the excellent networking that the region has developed in multiple areas such as mobility and public transport, housing, disadvantaged communities, and climate action, among others"that's why, "working with public libraries as a network, complementing each other's resources, and in such a culturally rich region, is only natural".
