The Lisbon Metropolitan Area is participating in the "Green Cities" partnership of the European Union's Urban Agenda, which focuses on green and blue infrastructure in urban contexts.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) is one of the entities participating as a stakeholder in partnership "Green Cities from European Union Urban AgendaHe co-coordinated the working group dedicated to financing, together with the municipality of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
"Green Cities is a three-year partnership centered on green and blue infrastructure in an urban contextThe partnership is based on the principles of green and blue infrastructure and has extensive links to a number of priority sectors, including the environment, sustainable transport, water management and urban agriculture. The partnership is organized into four working groups, each focusing on a specific aspect: financing; indicator systems; implementation of green/blue infrastructure and nature-based solutions; and methodologies for quantifying demand for green/blue infrastructure at local level.
Green and blue infrastructures are increasingly valued in urban development, with the aim of balancing human needs with environmental preservation. Green infrastructure refers to the integration of natural spaces, such as parks, gardens and areas of greenery, into the urban space, promoting biodiversity, absorbing pollutants and reducing heat islands. Blue infrastructures focus on sustainable water management, incorporating elements such as streams, lakes and retention basins into urban design to mitigate flooding or provide comfort and leisure. Both approaches seek to create more resilient urban environments, providing benefits for both residents and the urban ecosystem, contributing to more sustainable and healthier cities.
There are many examples of green and blue infrastructures in the Lisbon metropolitan area - some of which have even been.., compiled in three books.
The results of the "Green Cities" partnership will be highly relevant to the problems and needs of cities of all sizes with regard to preserving biodiversity and adapting to climate change. An action plan will be developed which will contain specific measures designed to accompany and help urban authorities tackle urban challenges.
