The Lisbon Chamber announced today an ambitious plan to humanize the city, creating several kilometers of temporary (pop-up) bicycle paths, low cost and easy to implement, as many other cities are already doing.

Lisbon currently has 105 km of cycling but does not yet have a comfortable and safe network, lacking structural connections. Until July 26 km will be added and until September another 30 km. The goal is to reach 200 km by March 2021, creating 6 structuring axes in the city and connecting schools, business zones, and residential areas.

An important fact: 68% of the trips in Lisbon are less than 5 km. If the cycling infrastructure grows and so do the users, the city gains less traffic.

Students will get vouchers of 100 euros to buy a bicycle, and all Lisbon residents will be able to get vouchers of 350 or 500 euros. Just keep the invoice and buy the bike in a store in Lisbon; if applicable, the reimbursement is done later. This is already underway.

The council also announced that 7750 new bicycle parking spaces will be created, 1050 in an enclosed environment:

  • Closed parking for bicycles in EMEL and CML-licensed underground parking lots: 1050 seats
  • Main Public Transportation Interfaces: 1700 seats
  • 5000 parking spaces for all entities of public interest that request it, such as schools, sports clubs and other institutions
