Released quietly earlier this year, the BiciPark network became 100% operational this week. There are a total of 238 spaces, including 24 for cargo bikes, distributed among 13 EMEL covered parking lots.

The 13 BiciParks can be found in the following parks: Lumiar, East Telheiras, West Telheiras, Cosme Damião, Alto dos Moinhos, Teixeira de Pascoais, Rego, Manuel Gouveia, Casal Vistoso, Sousa Pinto, Campo de Ourique, Graça, and Chão do Loureiro. You can find the exact locations of each further down in this article.

Access to the BiciParks network is free for all residents in the city of Lisbon over 18 years old who have a VIVA card (the one with the pass) and do not have a car. EMEL understands that a person doesn't have a car if they don't have a resident card, a green card or an EMEL parking permit. For those who do have a car, access to BiciParks has an extra 7 euros/month.

The 13 BiciParks offer covered and secure parking for bicycles. The space is closed and with restricted access (only those who have subscribed to the service can access it), and there are video surveillance on site. To join, just go to the EMEL client area and register, choosing a preferred park and associating the VIVA card.

A network to expand

In total, the EMEL operates 39 parking lots in Lisbon cityThere may therefore be a future expansion of the BiciParks network to new areas of the city. The current BiciParks network leaves out areas such as Olivais, Marvila, Belém or Alcântara.

The City of Lisbon is, at the same time work to create more covered bicycle parkingThis time in private parks, operated by the company Empark. The proposal has already been approved by the Lisbon Municipal Assembly. On the table is the reconversion of one car parking space in 20 Empark parks into a bicycle parking zoneto be operated by EMEL - possibly with the same brand and the same BiciPark system.

The 20 parks under discussion are: Alameda, Marquês de Pombal, Campo de Ourique, Avenida de Roma, Praça de Londres, Infante Santo, Avenida de Berna, Valbom, Campolide, Restauradores, Saldanha, Campo Mártires da Pátria, Largo de Jesus, Alexandre Herculano and Arco do Cego. The Lisbon Municipality and EMEL will also make car parking permits available to residents at these locations, in a strategy to free up public surface space that can be enjoyed by people and bicycles.
