The city's most coveted project has been unveiled: the new configuration of the Almirante Reis bike lane in its entirety is now known.

The Lisbon City Hall (CML) has just released, on your sitethe complete project for the new bicycle path on Avenida Almirante Reisa week after the news from Lisboa Para Pessoas which reported the beginning of some works on that artery. Ciclovia passes to the downward direction in bidirectional format, as already announced.
"In June 2020, during pandemic times, a segregated, pop-up cycle track was installed on Avenida Almirante Reis. With the gradual return of traffic, that solution proved unfeasible forcing the implementation of an alternative in June 2021"writes the municipality. "It is CML's intention to promote changes in this road axis, in order to qualify it in the long and short term by improving circulation levels and the general quality of experience on the Avenue."
According to CML, "studies are under development for a proposal of global, structuring qualification, promoting a new design, worthy of this very important artery in our city". For now, the municipality intends to move forward with this "interim proposal" in the sense of "improve the fluidity of road traffic and public transportation, as well as in all adjacent neighborhoods".
As expectedThe project keeps the existing bidirectional bicycle path in the Martim Moniz area and the connection on Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques. There will be changes in traffic directions in the Arroios Market area to remove the existing left turn on the avenue in that area. There will also be some changes in the central separator, namely in the Alameda and Martim Moniz areas.
Assumptions of the new solution, according to CML
- It allows the repositioning of two circulation lanes in the direction of the exit, Martim Moniz/Areeiro, promoting greater traffic flow and reducing pollution levels;
- It allows the rescue channel to access St. Joseph's Hospital, at the expense of the exceptional and integral use of the cycling channel;
- It maintains only one lane in the southbound direction from the city entrance to the center, thus conditioning the access to downtown from excessive traffic. This solution does not promote an increase in road demand to the city center. It only seeks to increase fluidity and flow;
- In the downstream and upstream right lanes will all be zone 30, increasing safety and fluidity through constant speed;
- Implementation of intelligent traffic signal management, allowing traffic to be driven, in block, continuously along the Avenue creating the platoon effect, promoting the "green wave" concept.
- Maintenance of all current parking and all loading and unloading spaces. From a global point of view, this expedite operation implies the gain of about 60 parking spaces in the Arroios market area.
- Intrinsic to this proposal is the concern to promote a quick change with a reduced urban impact, without changing the geometry, either of the central plate or of the parking cutouts.
- This intervention only involves paint scraping and repainting, removing and locating beacons and changing the location of kerb "islands" recently made when installing the pop-upfor the location of traffic lights. It will have reduced costs and obeys the criteria of rationality of public investment.
