MB Way can now be used to travel on the MTS, the metro of South Tagus

A very simple and practical way to travel on the Almada and Seixal metro, if you are an occasional passenger who therefore does not have a Navegante pass.

It's very simple and practical: just open the MB Way app, scan the QR code on the station and pay. The trip has the usual cost of 85 cents and save the 50 cents of the card purchase. As of this week, you can travel occasionally on the MTS, the light rail south of the Tagus, with just your cell phone and MB Way - no queues and no cards.

MTS (Metro Transportes do Sul) is the first operator in the Lisbon metropolitan area to offer MB Way as a way to purchase trips. With this system, developed by SIBS and implemented in 2022 in STCP buses in Porto, the passengers no longer need to buy a physical transport card in advance, but can just use their cell phone to scan a QR code and pay in a few minutes..

There are QR codes at all 18 stations on the MTS network, which covers the municipalities of Almada and Seixal and consists of three lines. Just walk up to one of these codes and:

  1. open the MB Way app and click on "Pay with MB Way";
  2. point your phone's camera at the QR code on the station (check that you are going in the right direction and that you have chosen the code for the line you want);
  3. on the confirmation screen, you can add your TIN and an email for invoice;
  4. just click "Pay" and you're on your way.

The cost of the trip is 85 cents and, as you used MB Way, you don't need to do anything in the MTS validators - you just have to keep going. In case of inspection, you will only have to present the trip that was charged to you in your MB Way app, in the "Activity" tab.

Note that a trip corresponds to a use of the MTS, between an origin and a destination, for a maximum of one hour after purchase. The ticket must be purchased before the start of the journey, at the departure station. If you are traveling with a group, the same person can buy several journeys on their app by repeating the QR code scanning process. If you make a mistake when buying a trip (i.e. you scan the QR code from another line or in the opposite direction), you will have to buy a new ticket.

Mobile payment in public transport brings with it a number of significant advantages that could revolutionize the way passengers handle their daily journeys. This approach is driven by the advancement of mobile technology and the growing adoption of payment apps such as MB Way. One of the main advantages of mobile payments is the convenience offered to passengers, with no need to carry cash or specific physical cards to pay for journeys.

Another advantage is the speed and agility of this system. Mobile payment streamlines the process of boarding and disembarking the metro. Instead of needing cash or waiting to insert a card into a machine, simply scan a QR code with your smartphone and the purchase is made in a matter of seconds.

With five million users, MB Way offers the same security guarantees that already exist today in bank card payments at an ATM terminal. MB Way uses security protocols and algorithms ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and authentication of data transmitted, processed and stored following the latest and most demanding European security standards.
