Next Saturday morning, April 6, you'll be able to enjoy Lisbon, Oeiras and Cascais without cars. There will be more than 15 km between Alcântara and Parede, where you can walk, run, cycle or play to your heart's content.

On the morning of next Saturday, April 6, the entire marginal axis of Lisbon (from Alcântara), Oeiras and Cascais (up to Parede) will be car-free and will be given back to the people. There will be more than 15 kilometers of walking, cycling, running and playing. Between 9am and 1pm.
Traffic will be cut off along the entire length of Avenida da Índia, between Alcântara and Algés, and then along Avenida Marginal as far as Parede, in Cascais. The aim of this initiative - which is unprecedented as it unites the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras and Cascais - is to mark the World Physical Activity Day.
The riverside and maritime axis of the three municipalities will thus be transformed into a a huge space for promoting healthier lifestyles for all, with a particular emphasis on sports practice. Along the 15 kilometers, there will be various activities prepared by each of the municipalities, involving different partners. It will be possible to try out the most varied sports, play on inflatables, take part in fitness classes or yoga sessions, or go for health checks. You can consult the program at Lisbon here, that of Oeiras here and that of Cascais here.
Those who don't want to take part in these activities can simply use the road freely. AThe four road lanes will be divided into two pedestrian lanes and two lanes for bicycles, scooters and other equivalent modes, in order to avoid conflicts.
World Physical Activity Day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent sedentary lifestyles, since physical inactivity is considered the fourth leading risk factor for death in the world. The WHO recommends that adults get at least 30 minutes of physical exercise a day. This day is celebrated annually on April 6 in more than 120 countries.
For Oeiras, this event is nothing new. O Once a year, the municipality closes Avenida Marginal to carsand open it up to people, bicycles and physical activity. This year is the first time that Cascais and Lisbon have joined this initiative.
