City Hall publishes bicycle projects for Berna and Almirante Reis avenues and Alameda das Linha de Torres

These are three important axes in the city and the construction work will now start in February. At Avenue of Bernthe parking lot will be reconverted into two one-way bike paths, similar to what happened at Fontes Pereira de Melo; at Admiral Reisthe current bidirectional cycling path will be, as already announced, converted into two unidirectional ones and will reach Areeiro, but also Praça da Figueira; already in Alameda das Linhas de TorresThere will be an axis connecting Lumiar to the rest of the city via Campo Grande.

After hearing harsh criticism about the implementation of cycling projects without prior notice or publication of the respective projects, the Lisbon City Council has now done so in a dedicated section on its website. This is it that you can consult all the bike paths executed in the city since 2020, as well as all the ongoing projects and planned interventions.

With the Marechal Gomes da Costa corridor Underway and due for completion by the middle of this month, attention is now turning to two important new links. One of them will be on the Avenue of Bern which will have a similar profile to Fontes de Pereira de Melo: two one-way cycle lanes connecting Praça de Espanha to Avenida da República. Bicycles will pass where there is currently car parking with the necessary changes to bus stops and sidewalks. "The existing places for loading and unloading and picking up and dropping off passengers are transferred to the streets adjacent to Bern Avenue"says the municipality. "Lowering of the sidewalk will be done at several points in order to improve accessibility conditions along the axis for people with mobility impairments."

On Avenida Almirante Reis, a one-way cycle lane will also be created, about 1.7 meters wide. The existing bike path will be reconverted and extended to Areeiro, passing through the traffic circle of the Chile Square and connecting in Alameda to Avenida Guerra Junqueiro. From there cyclists will be able to take the Praça de Londres and Avenida de Paris soon after, reaching Areeiro through the future bike path that will be created at the traffic circle and on Avenida Afonso Costa. In Martim Moniz, the connection will be made by a bidirectional channel through the square and Rua João das Regras, currently a pedestrian artery, ending at Praça da Figueira. As for the continuation from here, nothing is known yet.

"The segregation of the road channel will be carried out with elements that can be galled in emergency and rescue situations"the Chamber notes, recalling that the Almirante Reis is "a structuring axis in Lisbon's cycling network, being the flattest and most direct route between downtown and the urban areas in the eastern center (Arroios, Anjos, Penha de França) and eastern north (Areeiro, Alvalade, Olaias)". "The completion of this bike path will allow us to create a safe connection and improve road safety conditions along this axis, as well as, solve a number of issues identified following the bike path already implemented up to the Chile Square"mentions.

The Alameda das Linhas de Torres bike path will be about two kilometers long between Campo Grande and the existing bike path in the square under the North-South Axis. The City Museum/NOS Campo Grande intersection will be redone with the bike path no longer going up the sidewalk, going along the road instead. It will also be connected to Rua Francisco Stromp (Telheiras), where a one-way bicycle path is being completed. The entire channel will be bidirectional. "The intervention will improve road safety along this axis, which serves several schools, universities and services, and also aims to improve pedestrian accessibility, including improving access to public transport waiting areas"says the municipality.

The three projects will start in February and have a deadline of XX days, and should be ready by mid March or April. The projects on Avenida de Berna and Almirante Reis will use zicla separators to segregate the bike lane, similar to what happened in Alameda dos Oceanos, while bollards will be installed in Alameda das Linhas de Torres.
