App Navegante will be launched this year and will facilitate the use of public transportation

The old Viva Portal will be replaced this year by the Navegante portal, making it easier to manage accounts and upload tickets/passes. The App for iOS and Android will be launched later. Bank cards will also be used to pay for public transportation directly. No dates yet.

It started out as the name of the pass and recently also the name of the card where this pass (and other transport tickets) can be loadedbut Navegante will be the brand that will represent the entire ticketing system of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML)by linking the different operators, including the Metropolitan Railway. The next materialization of Navegante for the users of public transportation in the Lisbon region will be an app mobile and a web portal, which will be launched this year.

The Portal Navegante.com will replace the old Viva Portal and absorb some of its functionalitiesaccount management and the possibility of loading tickets/passes - operations that will now be accessible with a login safe and modern, that is, without the need for a device to read the Citizen's Card as is the case today. Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML), responsible for Navegante, did not want to commit to concrete dates.

App will be an alternative to the card

The application will allow you to use your cell phone (iOS/Android) to pay for public transportation in Lisbon, without the need for a physical card. Currently, although there is already an application (the Pick Hub) that allows you to charge the pass on your cell phone, the physical card is still required to make trips. The Navegante app, which will be launched after the portal, will serve as a virtual card and can be used as an alternative to the conventional Navegante card (the common "pass card").

TML is also working to allow the use of bank cards as a form of payment for travel, as already happens, for example, in some metro stations and on a bus line in Porto, and in other European cities. Neither the app nor the bank card will replace the Navegante's physical card, but they will work as alternatives, and it will be up to the passenger to choose the payment method he/she prefers (Navegante's card, app or bank card). For example, the use of the bank card as a payment method is important for occasional passengers.

The Navigator will matter as much to passengers, but will have an extended behind-the-scenes function for the entire metropolitan-level public transport operation. The Navegante will be the true aggregator of all operators, namely Carris Metropolitana, the municipal bus operators (Carris, MobiCascais, Transportes Colectivos do Barreiro), Metro de Lisboa, Metro Sul do Tejo, CP, Fertagus and TTSL - buses, metro, trains and boats will all have the same ticketing and communication system.

Basically, the Navegante will be a giant invisible technological platform that will allow all these companies an integrated management of passengers and ticketing - for example, with APIs for external integrations, shared data services, and a centralized CRM (customer relationship management) system.

The Navegante started as a fare pricing system and, last year, it also became a card, replacing the Lisboa Viva card. Still in 2021, the Navigator Pointsto allow the card to be printed in a matter of minutes. This year, with the entry into operation of the Metropolitan RailwayThe "Navegante" will also be the name of the physical customer support points (there will be 26 Navegante Spaces throughout the LMA, not counting 1750 smaller points of sale). Besides the app and the portal, the Navegante will also allow bicycles to be parked at intermodal terminals, starting in Setúbal. Currently, the Navegante works with Lisbon's network of 13 BiciParksmanaged by EMEL in partnership with TML.

The new details of the Navegante were presented this Friday, April 1st, at an event held at Pátio da Galé, dedicated to Carris Metropolitana.
